Driver from Fatal Wrong-Way Car Crash in Las Vegas Gets Sentenced
A Las Vegas resident who pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and causing a deadly wrong-way collision on U.S. Highway 95 in September 2020 was sentenced Friday to at least six years in prison.
Benjamin Ames, 33, was driving approximately 100 mph and had a blood alcohol concentration three times the legal limit at the time of the collision that killed 58-year-old Susan Teves, according to authorities.
In December, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of DUI resulting in death, according to court records. On Friday, District Judge Jacqueline Bluth sentenced him to six to 20 years in prison.
The Nevada Highway Patrol has said that Ames was driving a Hummer the wrong way on I-15 near Russell Road at around 1:45 a.m. September 11, 2020, when he collided head-on with Teves' Nissan Sentra.
On Friday morning, her husband sobbed as he delivered a note to the judge. Danny Teves said he is still haunted by the phone call requesting him to identify his wife's corpse.
After listening to Teves speak, Ames, who was represented by a video connection, wept as he listened. He said the aftermath of the accident has been a “nightmare.”
