According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, a suspected impaired driver was arrested early Thursday morning after driving nearly 80 mph on the Las Vegas Strip before crashing into another car, killing the driver. LVMPD said the driver, traveling in an unregistered BMW, accelerated rapidly, reaching 78 mph in a 30 mph zone before slamming into a Nissan outside of Resorts World at around 1:30 am. Police said the Nissan was making a left turn into Resorts World when the crash occurred. The 50-year-old driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Police also said the driver of the BMW admitted to smoking marijuana before the incident. She was taken to University Medical Center and now faces several DUI charges, including DUI resulting in death, DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm, as well as multiple counts of reckless driving. No bail has been set as records show the driver was on probation for a previous felony charge. Las Vegas Boulevard remained closed for several hours in both directions while LVMPD investigated the scene. “Car accidents are on the rise in the Las Vegas area.
