What Happened at Camp Lejeune?
Over the course of four decades, North Carolina's U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune provided contaminated drinking water, putting hundreds of thousands of people at risk for cancer and other serious illnesses. Between 1953 and 1987, two wells at Camp Lejeune were contaminated with harmful chemicals known to cause cancer and other severe illnesses. The contaminated drinking water was supplied to daycares, schools, to military families for drinking and bathing, to hospital patients, and many workers. 15 unique illnesses and medical conditions, including several types of cancer, reproductive problems, birth defects, and Parkinson's disease have been linked to Camp Lejeune water contamination. Over one million people worked and more lived in the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River, North Carolina between the years of 1953 and 1987. Marines and their families were exposed to toxic drinking water contaminated with industrial solvents, benzene, and other harmful chemicals. Many of these chemicals were found at levels ranging from 240-3,400x the level permitted by accepted safety standards. In 1997, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) produced their findings with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) report, concluding that the water had been contaminated for over 3 decades.Steps to Take for Camp Lejeune Compensation
