Medical Episode May Be the Cause of a Deadly 10 Car Crash
Las Vegas police were investigating a 10-vehicle crash in the East Valley on Monday afternoon that left one man dead.
The crash occurred around 3:40 p.m. at Sahara Avenue south of Lamb Boulevard, when a 69-year-old driving a 1993 Toyota Camry “sideswiped” oncoming cars in the adjacent lanes. The Camry then crashed into vehicles stopped at the red light, creating a “ping-pong effect,” said police.
A total of 10 vehicles were involved in the crash. The Camry driver was the only one in his vehicle and died at the scene. The driver of an overturned car was taken to Sunrise Hospital with “minor injuries.”
"The vehicle hit the car that’s flipped, and it just caught on fire," said Yvonne Leon, whose car was involved in the crash. "We started calling 911, but after we saw the flames come up we got out of the car because they just started flaring everywhere. So I told my son to get out of the car."
Lt. Bret Ficklin of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said the driver who caused the crash may have been experiencing a medical episode.
“Preliminary information reveals that it was quite possibly a medical episode that was experienced by the driver,” Ficklin said. “When you look at the circumstances of the collision, we’re fortunate that we didn’t have far more injuries.”
Damages to other cars range from extreme to minor. According to the police, a 19-year-old man in one of the vehicles suffered "serious" injuries.
This marks LVMPD’s 29th traffic-related fatality of 2020.
