Were You Diagnosed With Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) After Receiving Breast Implants?
The World Health Organization designated BIA-ALCL as a T-cell lymphoma that can develop following breast implants in 2016. In 2017 the FDA recognized the WHO’s designation that BIA-ALCL can occur after receiving breast implants.
The FDA announced in February 2019 that the number of women who have developed the disease continues to rise and stands at 457. Nine in the U.S. have died from BIA-ALCL. Breast implants have been shown to greatly increase the risk of developing this rare type of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
BIA-ALCL can occur in many different parts of the body, including the lymph nodes and skin. It is NOT breast cancer.
Manufactures of the breast implants include Mentor/Johnson & Johnson, Allergan/Actavis, and Sientra. The implants that have shown to increase risks of BIA-ALCL can be either silicone gel or saline with either a textured or smooth surface.
Patients who develop BIA-ALCL typically undergo surgery to remove the implant, while others may be treated with radiation and chemotherapy. It can take up to 10 years for the disease to present in patients.

How is BIA-ALCL Diagnosed?
